Halesi is one of the important power places in Nepal revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. The place beautifully lies on the ridge top above Dudhkosi River in the eastern hills of Nepal. There are several natural caves and hillocks dwelled and meditated by god, goddesses and Siddhas since the time immemorial. For Hindus, the site is Haleshower Mahadev, named after Shiva’s hide in one of the cave from demon Bhasmashura. Buddhist Guru Padmasambhava attended terma (hidden treasure) of longevity teachings of Buddha Amitabha. The journey to this holy place begins from Kathmandu passing Banepa, Dhulikhel via Araniko highway and the adjoining route of Sinduli, Bardibas, B.P Highway, Nepalthok, Khurkot, turning the route to Ghurmi through mid hilly highway. The Distance of Khurkot is 112km from Kathmandu and Ghurmi is another 61KM from Khurkot. Halesi Mahadev is very famous religious center from the ancient time. Halesi Mahadev in Pilgrims three hours time by using Charter Helicopter from Kathmandu. During the homage hours, kettledrum, cymbal, clarinet etc, there is a custom of performing special ceremonial rites of the Haleshor Mahadeva during some festivals such as Bala Chaturdashi, Shiva Ratri, Ram Nawami and Teez etc. In between, devotees perform various other religious performances like fire sacrifice and recitals of the Rudri, the Chandi and the Vedas, our religious epics, burning of 10 millions holy threads and offering millions of wood apple leaves etc. The Haleshwor Mahadeva is taken as the god of fulfilling wishes and giving boons to the real devotees. So devotees vow solemnly and act accordingly as their wishes has been fulfilled.We believe this is only the place for the people all over the world to visit once in a life time and watch the beautiful, mysterious amazing and purely religious place where the people are traditionally rich in their culture. It is really a matter of pride to all of us. The glory of three different religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, and Kirat), this pilgrimage and Halesi Mahadev is worshipped as the great god even of gods and goddess (Devadidev) by Hindus, the founder of Kirat religion is believed to have origin at this place by Kirat people, whereas Buddhists venerate Halesi regarding it as one of their six important pilgrimage sites.
It is believed that ascetic of Shaiva (The existing Hindus from time immemorial), and Buddhists and also other several ascetics have obtained Salvation meditating at Halesi. Buddhists worship it as a divine place where their great Guru Rimpoche, Padmasambhava meditated and accomplished immortality. Hence, Buddhist religion followers, priests come to worship Halesi with a belief of getting 10 more years of lifespan and also Salvation. Pilgrims blow the Sankha (Blowing shell) at the beginning which is hanging on the wall of Prabesh Dwar (Entering gate) of this cave. The ancient scriptures say that lord Shiva hides goddess Parvati in the place of today’s Shivalinga when Bhirkhasur was chasing them.
